निपेतुः तुरगाः तस्य रथ युक्ता महाजवाः ।
समे पुष्पचिते देशे राजमार्गे यदृच्छया ॥३-२३-२॥
nipetuḥ turagāḥ tasya ratha yuktā mahājavāḥ |
same puṣpacite deśe rājamārge yadṛcchayā ॥3-23-2॥
Translation
His very swift horses, yoked to the chariot, suddenly fell down on the even, flower-strewn royal highway.

उसके (खर के) रथ में जुते हुए महावेगवान घोड़े, फूलों से ढके हुए समतल राजमार्ग पर अचानक (बिना किसी कारण के) गिर पड़े।
English Commentary
According to omenology, the stumbling of horses at the onset of a journey is a harbinger of defeat or death. Valmiki emphasizes the unnaturalness of this event: the road was 'Same' (level) and 'Pushpachite' (strewn with flowers), offering no physical obstacle. Yet, the horses fell 'Yadrichchhaya' (accidentally/of their own accord). This suggests a supernatural obstruction. The falling of the very beasts meant to carry Khara to victory symbolizes the collapse of his support system and the inevitability of his fall before Rama.

शकुन शास्त्र के अनुसार, युद्ध के लिए जाते समय वाहन का टूटना या घोड़ों का गिरना राजा की पराजय या मृत्यु का निश्चित संकेत है। यहाँ विरोधाभास (Contrast) महत्वपूर्ण है: रास्ता 'समे' (समतल) है और 'पुष्पचिते' (फूलों से ढका) है, फिर भी घोड़े गिर गए। 'यदृच्छया' (अचानक/अपने आप) गिरना दैवीय हस्तक्षेप या दुर्भाग्य का सूचक है। खर के घोड़े 'महाजवाः' (तेज धावक) थे, उनका गिरना सामान्य घटना नहीं थी। यह घटना स्पष्ट करती है कि खर का आधार (Foundation) अब डगमगा रहा है और उसकी यात्रा का अंत दुखद होगा।
