Srimad Valmiki Ramayana
जग्राह सूर्यम् स्वर्भानुः अपर्वणि महाग्रहः ।
प्रवाति मारुतः शीघ्रम् निष्प्रभो अभूत् दिवाकरः ॥३-२३-१२॥
jagrāha sūryam svarbhānuḥ aparvaṇi mahāgrahaḥ |
pravāti mārutaḥ śīghram niṣprabho abhūt divākaraḥ ॥3-23-12॥
Translation
Though it was not the time of the conjunction (new moon), the great planet Rahu seized the Sun (caused an eclipse). The wind blew violently, and the sun lost its luster.

पर्व (अमावस्या/पूर्णिमा) का समय न होने पर भी महाग्रह राहु ने सूर्य को ग्रस लिया (सूर्य ग्रहण लग गया)। वायु तीव्र गति से चलने लगी और सूर्य का तेज नष्ट हो गया।
English Commentary
This verse describes a catastrophic celestial omen: an untimely solar eclipse. 'Svarbhanu' (Rahu) swallowing the sun when it is not the 'parva' (the astronomical node/new moon time) indicates a total collapse of cosmic order. In the epic worldview, such an event invariably precedes the death of a powerful tyrant or a massive war. The sun losing its brilliance ('niṣprabho') mirrors the imminent loss of glory for the Rakshasa race. The violent winds ('pravāti mārutaḥ') accompany this darkness, creating a sensory experience of chaos. This is the universe screaming that the current path of Khara leads only to absolute void and destruction.

'अपर्वणि' का अर्थ है 'बिना पर्व के' अर्थात जब ग्रहण नहीं लगना चाहिए। बिना अमावस्या के सूर्य ग्रहण लगना (राहु द्वारा सूर्य को ग्रसना) शास्त्रों में राजा के विनाश और राज्यभंग का सबसे बड़ा संकेत माना गया है। प्रकृति का संतुलन पूरी तरह बिगड़ चुका है। वायु का तीव्र गति से चलना और सूर्य का 'निष्प्रभ' (तेजहीन) हो जाना यह दर्शाता है कि खर का प्रताप अब क्षीण हो चुका है। राम, जो सूर्यवंश के हैं, उनके तेज के सामने भौतिक सूर्य भी फीका पड़ रहा है या यह संकेत दे रहा है कि राक्षसी शक्ति रूपी अंधकार अब मिटने वाला है, भले ही क्षणिक रूप से उसने प्रकाश को ढक लिया हो।
