उत्पेतुः च विना रात्रिम् ताराः खद्योतन प्रभाः ।
संलीन मीन विहगा नलिन्यः शुष्क पंकजाः ॥३-२३-१३॥
utpetuḥ ca vinā rātrim tārāḥ khadyotana prabhāḥ |
saṃlīna mīna vihagā nalinyaḥ śuṣka paṃkajāḥ ॥3-23-13॥
Translation
Stars shining like fireflies appeared even though it was not night. Fish and birds hid themselves, and the lotuses in the ponds withered away.

रात्रि न होने पर भी आकाश में जुगनुओं की चमक वाले तारे दिखाई देने लगे। सरोवरों में मछलियाँ और पक्षी छिप गए और कमलों के फूल सूख गए।
English Commentary
The inversion of day and night continues with stars appearing during the day. However, they lack their celestial majesty, shining instead like 'khadyota' (fireflies), suggesting a weak, dying light. The reaction of the aquatic life—fish and birds hiding—shows deep instinctual fear pervading all levels of existence. The withering of lotuses ('śuṣka paṃkajāḥ') is particularly poignant; the lotus symbolizes life, purity, and unfolding glory. Their instantaneous drying up signifies the draining of vitality from Khara's army. The environment is reacting as if struck by a sudden, deadly blight, anticipating the devastating weaponry Rama is about to unleash.

दिन में तारों का दिखना सूर्य के तेज के नष्ट होने का परिणाम है। तारों की तुलना 'खद्योत' (जुगनुओं) से की गई है, जो उनकी मद्धिम और अशुभ चमक को दर्शाती है। जलचर और नभचर (मछली और पक्षी) भयभीत होकर 'संलीन' (छिप) गए हैं। कमलों का सूखना ('शुष्क पंकजाः') जीवन शक्ति और सुंदरता के विनाश का प्रतीक है। कमल जल पर आश्रित हैं, और जल जीवन है; इनका सूखना बताता है कि दंडकारण्य की सरसता युद्ध की विभीषिका में नष्ट होने वाली है। प्रकृति जीवन (life-force) को समेट रही है क्योंकि मृत्यु का तांडव होने वाला है।
