अब्रवीत् राक्षसान् सर्वान् प्रहसन् स खरः तदा ।
महा उत्पातान् इमान् सर्वान् उत्थितान् घोर दर्शनान् ॥३-२३-१९॥
abravīt rākṣasān sarvān prahasan sa kharaḥ tadā |
mahā utpātān imān sarvān utthitān ghora darśanān ॥3-23-19॥
Translation
Observing those terrible great omens arising, Khara then laughed and spoke to all the Rakshasas.

उन भयानक दिखने वाले महान अपशकुनों के प्रकट होने पर भी, उस समय खर हंसता हुआ सभी राक्षसों से बोला।
English Commentary
Khara's reaction to the cosmic warnings is laughter ('prahasan'). This laughter serves two purposes: it displays his supreme arrogance and attempts to bolster the morale of his terrified troops. By laughing at the 'ghora darśanān' (terrifying sights), he positions himself as superior to fate and nature. This is a classic trait of the antagonist in epic literature—the rejection of divine order. Instead of introspection, he chooses bravado, addressing his army to dismiss the valid fears raised by the environment.

खर की प्रतिक्रिया भय या सावधानी की नहीं, बल्कि उपहास की है। 'प्रहसन्' (हंसते हुए) शब्द उसकी मूढ़ता और अहंकार की चरम सीमा को दर्शाता है। जहाँ ज्ञानी व्यक्ति ऐसे संकेतों पर गंभीर हो जाता, वहाँ खर अपनी सेना का मनोबल बनाए रखने के लिए या अपने दंभ के कारण उन संकेतों का मजाक उड़ा रहा है। यह हंसी मृत्यु के मुख में जाने वाले व्यक्ति का प्रलाप है। वह अपने अनुचरों को संबोधित करता है ताकि उनके मन में उत्पन्न भय को समाप्त कर सके, परन्तु यह प्रयास विनाश को आमंत्रित करने जैसा है।
