ततो ध्वजम् उपागम्य हेम दण्डम् समुच्छ्रितम् ।
समाक्रम्य महाकायः तस्थौ गृध्रः सुदारुणः ॥३-२३-४॥
tato dhvajam upāgamya hema daṇḍam samucchritam |
samākramya mahākāyaḥ tasthau gṛdhraḥ sudāruṇaḥ ॥3-23-4॥
Translation
Then, a gigantic and very terrible vulture approached and perched upon the raised golden flagstaff.
हिंदी अनुवाद
तदनन्तर, एक विशाल शरीर वाला अत्यंत भयानक गिद्ध, सोने के दंड वाले ऊँचे ध्वज पर आकर बैठ गया।
English Commentary
The appearance of a vulture ('Gridhrah') is a quintessential omen of death in epics, as these birds feed on the dead. For a vulture—described here as 'Mahakayah' (huge-bodied) and 'Sudaruṇah' (very terrible)—to perch specifically on the 'Dhvajam' (flagstaff) of the war chariot is a direct sign of the warrior's doom. The flag represents the commander's glory; the vulture claiming it signifies that glory will soon be replaced by carrion. This is a chilling foreshadowing that Khara will not return from this battle alive.

गिद्ध (गृध्र) को मृत्यु का पक्षी माना जाता है क्योंकि वह शवों को खाता है। युद्ध के लिए जाते हुए रथ की ध्वजा पर गिद्ध का बैठना सबसे अशुभ संकेतों में से एक है। 'महाकायः' (विशाल शरीर वाला) और 'सुदारुणः' (अत्यंत भयानक) विशेषण भय को बढ़ाते हैं। ध्वज राजा के सम्मान और उपस्थिति का प्रतीक है; उस पर गिद्ध का बैठना यह संकेत है कि यह ध्वज शीघ्र ही गिरने वाला है और रथी का मांस गिद्धों का भोजन बनेगा। यह अपशकुन खर की व्यक्तिगत मृत्यु की भविष्यवाणी करता है।
