स उष्णीषैरुत्तमाङ्गैश्च साङ्गदैर्बाहुभिस्तथा ।
ऊरुभिर्बाहुभिश्च्छिन्नैर्नानारूपैर्विभूषणैः ॥ ॥३-२५-४३॥
Sa uṣṇīṣairuttamāṅgaiśca sāṅgadairbāhubhistathā |
Ūrubhirbāhubhiścchinnairnānārūpairvibhūṣaṇaiḥ ॥3-25-43॥
Translation
The battlefield was strewn with severed heads still wearing turbans, arms adorned with armlets, severed thighs, and various types of ornaments.

रणभूमि कटे हुए उष्णीष (पगड़ी) युक्त मस्तकों, बाजूबंदों (अंगद) सहित भुजाओं, कटी हुई जंघाओं और अनेक प्रकार के आभूषणों से पट गई थी।
English Commentary

यहाँ वाल्मीकि रामायण के युद्ध वर्णन में 'वीभत्स रस' की निष्पत्ति देखी जा सकती है। कवि ने रणभूमि का जो चित्र खींचा है, वह अत्यंत भयावह है। 'उष्णीष' (पगड़ी) और 'अंगद' (बाजूबंद) का उल्लेख यह दर्शाता है कि मरने वाले राक्षस सामान्य सैनिक नहीं, बल्कि उच्च कुल के और सुसज्जित योद्धा थे। श्रीराम के बाणों की तीक्ष्णता का अनुमान इस बात से लगाया जा सकता है कि उन्होंने शरीरों को इस प्रकार विदीर्ण किया कि मस्तक, भुजाएँ और जंघाएँ आभूषणों सहित अलग-अलग बिखर गईं। यह दृश्य शत्रु पक्ष के विनाश की पूर्णता को दर्शाता है।
