ततः शर सहस्रेन रामम् अप्रतिम ओजसम् ।
अर्दयित्वा महानादम् ननाद समरे खरः ॥३-२५-६॥
tataḥ śara sahasrena rāmam apratima ojasam |
ardayitvā mahānādam nanāda samare kharaḥ ॥3-25-6॥
Translation
Then, in the battle, having assailed Rama—who possesses unequaled vitality—with a thousand arrows, Khara roared loudly.

तदनंतर, समरभूमि में खर ने अप्रतिम ओज वाले राम को एक हजार बाणों से पीड़ित करके (घायल करने का प्रयास करके) महान गर्जना की।
English Commentary
The physical combat initiates instantly with high intensity. Khara unleashes a barrage of 'shara sahasrena' (a thousand arrows) aimed at Rama. The text describes Rama as 'apratima ojasam' (of incomparable vitality/splendor), suggesting that while the arrows struck, they could not dim his glory. Khara, perceiving his overwhelming volley as a successful suppression of the enemy, lets out a triumphant roar ('nanāda'). This roar signifies his premature confidence, believing he has gained the upper hand against the single warrior standing before him.

युद्ध का प्रथम प्रहार खर द्वारा किया गया। उसने 'शर सहस्रेन' (हजार बाणों) की बौछार से राम को ढक दिया। राम के लिए 'अप्रतिम ओजसम्' (जिसके ओज/तेज की कोई तुलना न हो) विशेषण का प्रयोग करके कवि यह बताते हैं कि यद्यपि खर ने बाण मारे, परन्तु राम का तेज कम नहीं हुआ। 'अर्दयित्वा' का अर्थ है पीड़ित करना या चोट पहुँचाना। खर को लगा कि उसने राम को दबा दिया है, इसलिए उसने विजय के उन्माद में 'महान गर्जना' की। यह उसकी भूल थी; उसने राम के धैर्य को उनकी दुर्बलता समझ लिया।
