ततो अस्य सशरम् चापम् मुष्टि देशे महात्मनः ।
खरः चिच्छेद रामस्य दर्शयन् हस्त लाघवम् ॥ ॥३-२८-१५॥
tato asya saśaram cāpam muṣṭi deśe mahātmanaḥ |
kharaḥ ciccheda rāmasya darśayan hasta lāghavam ॥3-28-15॥
Translation
Then, displaying his dexterity of hand, Khara cut the bow—along with the arrow—of the high-souled Rama at the grip.

तब खर ने अपने हाथ की सफाई (हस्त लाघव) दिखाते हुए, महात्मा श्रीराम के हाथ में स्थित बाण सहित धनुष को मुठिया (मूठ) के पास से काट डाला।
English Commentary
This verse serves to build tension by granting the antagonist a temporary tactical success. Khara displays hasta laghavam (lightness/dexterity of hand) by severing Rama's bow precisely at the handle (mushti deshe) while it was drawn. This is a feat of immense marksmanship. By disarming Rama, even momentarily, Khara proves he is a worthy adversary. The reference to Rama as Mahatmanah (great-souled) amidst this setback suggests that while his weapon was broken, his spirit remained untouched. It sets the stage for Rama to display his versatility and resilience in the subsequent verses.

युद्ध में एक क्षण ऐसा आता है जब अधर्म का पलड़ा भारी दिखता है। खर ने यहाँ अद्भुत रण-कौशल दिखाया है। 'हस्त लाघवम्' का अर्थ है हाथ की फुर्ती। उसने श्रीराम जैसे महान योद्धा के हाथ में तने हुए धनुष को ठीक 'मुष्टि देश' (जहाँ से धनुष पकड़ा जाता है) से काट दिया। यह खर की सटीकता (accuracy) का प्रमाण है। श्रीराम को यहाँ 'महात्मनः' कहा गया है, जो यह सूचित करता है कि शस्त्र कटने पर भी उनका धैर्य और आत्मा महान बनी रही। यह घटना युद्ध के रोमांच को बढ़ाती है और दिखाती है कि खर कोई साधारण योद्धा नहीं था।
