Srimad Valmiki Ramayana
स दर्शनीयो बहुधा विच्छिन्नः कांचनो ध्वजः ।
जगाम धरणीम् सूर्यो देवतानाम् इव आज्ञया ॥ ॥३-२८-२३॥
sa darśanīyo bahudhā vicchinnaḥ kāñcano dhvajaḥ |
jagāma dharaṇīm sūryo devatānām iva ājñayā ॥3-28-23॥
Translation
That beautiful golden flag, cut into many pieces, fell to the ground like the sun falling by the order of the gods.
हिंदी अनुवाद
वह देखने योग्य (सुंदर) स्वर्ण-ध्वज कई टुकड़ों में कटकर पृथ्वी पर ऐसे गिर पड़ा, मानो देवताओं की आज्ञा से सूर्य (आकाश से) गिर पड़ा हो।
English Commentary
The imagery here elevates the fall of a mere flag to a celestial event. The golden flag (kanchano dhvajah) was so resplendent that its collapse is likened to the sun falling from the sky at the command of the gods (devatanam iva ajnaya). This simile serves two purposes: it emphasizes the magnificence of the demon's chariot (showing he was no ordinary foe) and underscores the divine power behind Rama's arrows. Just as the sun's fall would spell doom for the world, the flag's fall spells the inevitable doom of Khara.

वाल्मीकि यहाँ एक भव्य उपमा का प्रयोग करते हैं। खर का ध्वज सोने का बना था और अत्यंत तेजस्वी था, इसलिए उसे 'सूर्य' कहा गया है। जब वह कटकर गिरा, तो ऐसा प्रतीत हुआ जैसे कोई दैवीय श्राप या देवताओं की आज्ञा पाकर स्वयं सूर्य धरती पर आ गिरा हो। यह उपमा खर के आसन्न पतन का संकेत है। जैसे सूर्य के बिना दिन अंधकारमय हो जाता है, वैसे ही ध्वज के गिरते ही खर की सेना और उसके रथ का तेज फीका पड़ गया। 'बहुधा विच्छिन्नः' (कई टुकड़ों में कटा हुआ) श्रीराम के प्रहार की भीषणता को दर्शाता है।
