तम् चतुर्भिः खरः क्रुद्धो रामम् गात्रेषु मार्गणैः ।
विव्याध हृदि मर्मज्ञो मातंगम् इव तोमरैः ॥ ॥३-२८-२४॥
tam caturbhiḥ kharaḥ kruddho rāmam gātreṣu mārgaṇaiḥ |
vivyādha hṛdi marmajño mātaṃgam iva tomaraiḥ ॥3-28-24॥
Translation
The enraged Khara, who knew the vital points, struck Rama in the limbs and the heart with four arrows, just as a mahout strikes an elephant with lances.

मर्म (कोमल अंगों) को जानने वाले क्रुद्ध खर ने श्रीराम के शरीर और हृदय (छाती) में चार बाणों से वैसे ही प्रहार किया, जैसे महावत हाथी को तोमरों (अंकुश/भाले) से मारता है।
English Commentary
Khara retaliates with precision. He is described as marmajnah—one who knows the vulnerable, vital spots of the body. He targets Rama's chest/heart (hridi), aiming to inflict lethal damage. The metaphor of striking an elephant (matangam) with lances or goads (tomaraiḥ) reiterates Rama's immense stability and size in terms of valor. Even while taking direct hits to vital areas, Rama stands firm like a colossus. This verse builds the tension, showing that the hero is physically vulnerable and taking damage before his final counter-attack.

अपना ध्वज कटते देख खर का क्रोध और भड़क उठा। वह 'मर्मज्ञ' है, अर्थात् वह जानता है कि शरीर के किन कोमल स्थानों (vital points) पर चोट करने से सर्वाधिक पीड़ा होती है। उसने श्रीराम के 'हृदि' (हृदय/वक्षस्थल) पर वार किया। यहाँ पुनः हाथी और तोमर की उपमा दी गई है। जैसे हाथी को नियंत्रित करने या पीड़ा देने के लिए तीखे तोमरों का प्रयोग होता है, वैसे ही खर ने श्रीराम को भेदने का प्रयास किया। यह खर की अंतिम आक्रामक चेष्टाओं में से एक है, जो श्रीराम के धैर्य की अंतिम परीक्षा ले रही है।
