Srimad Valmiki Ramayana
छित्त्वा वज्र निकाशेन राघवः प्रहसन् इव ।
त्रयोदशेन इन्द्र समो बिभेद समरे खरम् ॥ ॥३-२८-३१॥
chittvā vajra nikāśena rāghavaḥ prahasan iva |
trayodaśena indra samo bibheda samare kharam ॥3-28-31॥
Translation
Having cut everything, Raghava, who is equal to Indra, pierced Khara in the battle with the thirteenth arrow, which was like a thunderbolt, appearing as if he were smiling.
हिंदी अनुवाद
(सब कुछ) काटकर, इंद्र के समान पराक्रमी राघव ने वज्र के समान चमकने वाले तेरहवें बाण से, मानो हंसते हुए, युद्ध में खर को घायल कर दिया (भेद दिया)।
English Commentary
The sequence concludes with the thirteenth arrow. Having stripped Khara of his defenses, Rama pierces Khara himself (bibheda kharam). The arrow is likened to a vajra (thunderbolt). The phrase prahasan iva (as if smiling) is iconic. It suggests effortlessly achieved mastery. While Khara was screaming and roaring, Rama's demeanor is one of calm, almost playful dominance. This "smile" signifies that the difficult part of the battle is over; Rama has established total superiority over the demon lord.

तेरह बाणों के क्रम का यह अंतिम चरण है। १२ बाणों से रथ और शस्त्र नष्ट करने के बाद, १३वें बाण से श्रीराम ने सीधे खर के शरीर को भेदा। 'प्रहसन् इव' (मानो हंसते हुए) वाक्यांश अत्यंत महत्वपूर्ण है। यह श्रीराम के आत्मविश्वास और विजय की सहजता को दर्शाता है। जहाँ खर क्रोध से पागल था, वहीं श्रीराम सहज भाव से, बिना किसी तनाव के, युद्ध कर रहे थे। 'इन्द्र समो' (इन्द्र के समान) कहकर कवि ने उनकी अजेयता की पुष्टि की है। यह मुस्कान शत्रु के मनोबल को तोड़ने वाली अंतिम चोट है।
