खरम् तु विरथम् रामो गदा पाणिम् अवस्थितम् ।
मृदु पूर्वम् महातेजाः परुषम् वाक्यम् अब्रवीत् ॥ ॥३-२९-१॥
kharam tu viratham rāmo gadā pāṇim avasthitam |
mṛdu pūrvam mahātejāḥ paruṣam vākyam abravīt ॥3-29-1॥
Translation
Then, the greatly resplendent Rama spoke to Khara, who was standing chariot-less with a mace in his hand; his words were initially soft (in tone) but harsh (in meaning/content).
हिंदी अनुवाद
तब महातेजस्वी श्रीराम ने रथहीन और हाथ में गदा लिए खड़े खर से, पहले तो मृदुता पूर्वक, किन्तु (वास्तव में) कठोर वचन कहे।
English Commentary
This verse highlights Rama's demeanor as a disciplined warrior and a moral judge. Even facing a demon who tried to kill him, Rama begins his address with a certain composure (mridu purvam—softly at first). However, the content of his speech is parusham (harsh/severe). This is not a contradiction but a reflection of his duty. He does not shout in uncontrolled rage; rather, he delivers a calm but stinging verdict. Standing before the chariot-less (viratham) Khara, Rama assumes the role of Dharma personified, preparing to deliver the ultimate sentence.

यहाँ श्रीराम के चरित्र का एक विशिष्ट पहलू उजागर होता है। शत्रु निहत्था नहीं है (गदा उसके हाथ में है), लेकिन वह रथहीन है और पराजय के कगार पर है। श्रीराम 'महातेजाः' हैं, वे शत्रु की दयनीय स्थिति पर उपहास नहीं करते। उन्होंने 'मृदु पूर्वम्' (कोमलता से शुरुआत करते हुए) बात की, जो उनकी सभ्यता है, लेकिन उनके वचन 'परुषम्' (कठोर/सत्य) थे। यह कठोरता व्यक्तिगत द्वेष के कारण नहीं, बल्कि धर्म और न्याय की स्थापना के लिए थी। एक न्यायाधीश की तरह, दंड देने से पहले वे अपराधी को उसके अपराधों का स्मरण करा रहे हैं।
