Srimad Valmiki Ramayana
एवम् उक्तः तु रामेण क्रुद्धः संरक्त लोचनः ।
प्रति उवाच ततो रामम् प्रहसन् क्रोध मूर्चितः ॥ ॥३-२९-१५॥
Evam uktaḥ tu rāmeṇa kruddhaḥ saṃrakta locanaḥ |
Prati uvāca tato rāmam prahasan krodha mūrcitaḥ ॥3-29-15॥
Translation
Thus addressed by Rama, Khara, enraged with blood-red eyes and overwhelmed by anger, replied to Rama while laughing mockingly.

राम के द्वारा इस प्रकार कहे जाने पर, क्रोध से लाल नेत्रों वाला और क्रोध से मूच्छित (विवश) हुआ वह (खर), तब राम की हँसी उड़ाते हुए बोला।
English Commentary
This narrative bridge highlights the contrasting temperaments of the combatants. While Rama spoke with stern resolve, Khara reacts with krodha mūrcitaḥ—literally 'stupefied' or 'overwhelmed' by anger. His eyes turning red (saṃrakta locanaḥ) signifies a loss of control. However, his reaction is complex; he speaks prahasan (laughing). This laughter is a defense mechanism, a display of bravado to mask the stinging truth of Rama's words. It sets the stage for Khara’s rebuttal, which attempts to dismiss Rama’s threat through ridicule rather than reason.
