वासतो दण्डकारण्ये तापसान् धर्म चारिणः ।
किम् नु हत्वा महाभागान् फलम् प्राप्स्यसि राक्षस ॥ ॥३-२९-६॥
vasato daṇḍakāraṇye tāpasān dharma cāriṇaḥ |
kim nu hatvā mahābhāgān phalam prāpsyasi rākṣasa ॥3-29-6॥
Translation
"O demon, what fruit will you indeed obtain by killing the highly fortunate ascetics who practice Dharma and reside in the Dandaka forest?"
हिंदी अनुवाद
हे राक्षस! दंडकारण्य में निवास करने वाले धर्मचारी महान ऋषियों की हत्या करके तुम्हें भला कौन सा फल प्राप्त होगा? (अर्थात् केवल विनाश ही मिलेगा।)
English Commentary
Rama questions the utility and logic of evil. He asks Khara what he possibly hoped to gain (kim nu phalam prapsyasi) by slaughtering the ascetics of Dandaka. These sages were dharma charinah (walkers of the path of righteousness) and posed no military threat. By targeting the spiritual core of the forest, Khara committed a senseless atrocity. Rama implies that the 'fruit' of such an action can never be victory or sovereignty; it can only be annihilation. It underscores the senselessness of demonic violence.

श्रीराम यहाँ खर के अपराधों की विशिष्टता (specifics) पर आते हैं। खर का मुख्य अपराध किसी राजा से युद्ध करना नहीं, बल्कि निहत्थे 'धर्म चारिणः' (धर्म का आचरण करने वाले) ऋषियों की हत्या करना था। श्रीराम प्रश्न करते हैं—'किम् नु फलम्' (क्या फल मिला)? इस प्रश्न में व्यंग्य है। पाप का फल क्षणिक सुख हो सकता है, लेकिन अंतिम फल केवल दुख है। ऋषियों को 'महाभागान्' कहा गया है, जिसका अर्थ है महान भाग्य वाले या पूज्य। उनकी हत्या करके खर ने अपने दुर्भाग्य को आमंत्रित किया है।
