अवश्यम् लभते कर्ता फलम् पापस्य कर्मणः ।
घोरम् पर्यागते काले द्रुमः पुष्पम् इव आर्तवम् ॥ ॥३-२९-८॥
avaśyam labhate kartā phalam pāpasya karmaṇaḥ |
ghoram paryāgate kāle drumaḥ puṣpam iva ārtavam ॥3-29-8॥
Translation
"Just as a tree bears flowers when the proper season arrives, the doer undoubtedly reaps the terrible fruit of his sinful deed when the time comes."

जैसे समय (ऋतु) आने पर वृक्षों में फूल अवश्य लगते हैं, वैसे ही पापकर्म करने वाले कर्ता को समय आने पर (परियागते काले) अपने पाप का घोर फल अवश्य मिलता है।
English Commentary
This is a definitive statement on the Law of Karma. Rama uses the analogy of seasonal cycles (artavam). Just as nature mandates that trees blossom in their specific season, moral law mandates that every action bears fruit (phalam). The use of ghoram (terrible) describes the nature of the fruit for sinful deeds. There is an inevitability implied here; one cannot escape the consequences any more than a tree can refuse to blossom in spring. For Khara, the season of reckoning has arrived.

कर्म के सिद्धांत का यह एक उत्कृष्ट प्रतिपादन है। 'अवश्यम्' (निश्चित रूप से) शब्द कर्मफल की अनिवार्यता को बताता है। श्रीराम कहते हैं कि इसमें देर हो सकती है, लेकिन अंधेर नहीं। जैसे ऋतु ('आर्तवम्') आने पर वृक्ष में फूल खिलना प्रकृति का नियम है, वैसे ही पाप के परिपक्व होने पर दंड मिलना नियति का नियम है। खर के लिए वह 'समय' (पर्यागते काले) अब आ गया है। उसके पापों के फलने का समय यही है, और श्रीराम उस फल को देने वाले माध्यम हैं।
