Srimad Valmiki Ramayana
स प्रहस्य महा रौद्रः स्थित्वा अजृम्भत राक्षसः ।
जृंभमाणस्य ते बाणाः कायात् निष्पेतुर् अशुगाः ॥ ॥३-३-१६॥
Sa prahasya mahā raudraḥ sthitvā ajṛmbhata rākṣasaḥ |
jṛṃbhamāṇasya te bāṇāḥ kāyāt niṣpetur aśugāḥ ॥3-3-16॥
Translation
That terribly fierce demon laughed, stood firm, and yawned. As he yawned (and shook his body), those swift arrows fell away from his body.
हिंदी अनुवाद
वह महाभयानक राक्षस हँसकर वहीं खड़ा हो गया और जंभाई लेने लगा (अंगड़ाई ली)। उसके जंभाई लेते ही (शरीर को झटकते ही) वे बाण उसके शरीर से निकलकर गिर पड़े।
English Commentary
This verse presents a chilling display of supernatural invulnerability. Despite being turned into a pincushion by the brothers' arrows, Viradha simply laughs (prahasya). The act of yawning or stretching (ajṛmbhata) to dislodge the arrows demonstrates his contempt for their weapons. It signifies that conventional warfare is ineffective against him due to his boon. The visual of arrows simply falling off his body serves to heighten the tension—how does one defeat an enemy who treats lethal arrows as minor irritants? It sets up the necessity for Rama to employ a different strategy beyond mere archery.

यह श्लोक विराध की अलौकिक शक्ति और उसे प्राप्त वरदान का संकेत देता है। इतनी भीषण बाण वर्षा के बाद भी वह न केवल जीवित है, बल्कि 'प्रहस्य' (हँसकर) प्रतिक्रिया दे रहा है। 'अजृम्भत' का अर्थ यहाँ जंभाई लेना या शरीर को तानकर झटकना है। सामान्यतः बाण लगने पर पीड़ा होती है, लेकिन यहाँ विराध ने केवल शरीर हिलाया और बाण ऐसे गिर गए जैसे सूखी पत्तियाँ। यह दृश्य श्रीराम और लक्ष्मण के लिए विस्मयकारी था, क्योंकि उनके अमोघ बाण निष्फल हो रहे थे। यह राक्षस की शारीरिक अभेद्यता को दर्शाता है, जो ब्रह्मा जी के वरदान का परिणाम थी।
