Srimad Valmiki Ramayana
पुत्रः किल जवस्य अहम् माता मम शतह्रदा ।
विराध इति माम् आहुः पृथिव्याम् सर्व राक्षसाः ॥ ॥३-३-५॥
putraḥ kila javasya aham mātā mama śatahradā । virādha iti mām āhuḥ pṛthivyām sarva rākṣasāḥ ॥ ॥3-3-5॥
Translation
I am indeed the son of Java, and my mother is Shatahrada. All the Rakshasas on earth call me Viradha.
हिंदी अनुवाद
मैं 'जव' का पुत्र हूँ और मेरी माता 'शतह्रदा' हैं। पृथ्वी पर समस्त राक्षस मुझे 'विराध' नाम से पुकारते हैं।
English Commentary
Viradha establishes his credentials by naming his parents, Java and Shatahrada. In the heroic code, lineage implies the caliber of the warrior. By stating that "all Rakshasas on earth" call him Viradha, he claims a reputation of notoriety and fame among his kind. He is asserting that he is a significant threat, well-known in the dark corners of the world, attempting to intimidate the brothers with his infamy.

विराध अपनी असुरी वंशावली का परिचय देता है। पिता 'जव' और माता 'शतह्रदा' का उल्लेख कर वह अपनी शक्ति के स्रोत को बताता है। 'सर्व राक्षसाः' (सभी राक्षस) का उल्लेख करके वह यह जताना चाहता है कि वह राक्षसों के समाज में एक प्रसिद्ध और भयभीत करने वाला योद्धा है, कोई साधारण जीव नहीं। यह अपने प्रतिद्वंद्वी (राम) पर मनोवैज्ञानिक दबाव बनाने का प्रयास है।
