Srimad Valmiki Ramayana
स सुरेन्द्रेण संयुक्तो रामः सर्व अमरैः सह ।
उपयातो जनस्थानम् ब्रूहि कच्चित् अकंपन ॥ ॥३-३१-१३॥
sa surendreṇa saṃyukto rāmaḥ sarva amaraiḥ saha । upayāto janasthānam brūhi kaccit akampana ॥ ॥3-31-13॥
Translation
"Tell me, Akampana, did that Rama come to Janasthana accompanied by Indra and all the Immortals (Devas)?"

"हे अकंपन! सच बताओ, क्या वह राम इन्द्र और सभी देवताओं के साथ मिलकर जनस्थान आया था?"
English Commentary
Ravana attempts to rationalize the defeat using his existing worldview. In his mind, only the collective force of the Devas led by Indra (Surendrena samyukto) could destroy Janasthana. He cannot conceive of human agency being this potent. He assumes Rama must be a proxy or a front for a divine invasion. This question highlights Ravana’s underestimation of humanity (Nara), which is the specific loophole in his boon of immortality.

रावण का प्रश्न उसके अविश्वास को दर्शाता है। उसकी बुद्धि यह स्वीकार ही नहीं कर पा रही है कि एक मनुष्य अकेले पूरी सेना को मार सकता है। इसलिए वह अनुमान लगाता है कि अवश्य ही देवताओं ने इन्द्र के नेतृत्व में राम की सहायता की होगी। रावण देवताओं को अपना प्रतिद्वंद्वी मानता है, इसलिए उसे लगता है कि यह देवताओं का ही षड्यंत्र है। 'कच्चित्' शब्द का प्रयोग प्रश्न पूछने के लिए किया गया है, जिसमें उत्तर की आशा छिपी है कि "हाँ, देवता साथ थे।"
