एवम् उक्तो दशग्रीवः क्रुद्धः संरकत लोचनः ।
अकंपनम् उवाच इदम् निर्दहन् इव तेजसा ॥ ॥३-३१-३॥
evam ukto daśagrīvaḥ kruddhaḥ saṃrakta locanaḥ। akaṃpanam uvāca idam nirdahan iva tejasā ॥ ॥3-31-3॥
Translation
Thus addressed, the Ten-necked one (Ravana), enraged and with blood-red eyes, spoke this to Akampana, appearing as if to burn him with his radiance.
हिंदी अनुवाद
ऐसा कहे जाने पर, दशग्रीव (रावण) क्रोधित हो उठा और उसकी आँखें लाल हो गईं। वह अपने तेज से अकंपन को जलाता हुआ सा यह (वचन) बोला।
English Commentary
Ravana's introduction in this arc is defined by explosive rage. The epithet Dashagriva (Ten-necked) invokes his monstrous power. His physical reaction—blood-red eyes (saṃrakta locanaḥ)—signifies uncontrolled fury. The metaphor "burning him with his radiance" (nirdahan iva tejasā) illustrates the terrifying aura of Ravana; his mere presence is scorching when angry. It shows the danger inherent in serving a tyrant; Akampana risks death simply for delivering the truth. This sets the stage for the antagonistic dynamic between Rama's calm fortitude and Ravana's fiery ego.

यहाँ रावण का प्रथम भीषण परिचय मिलता है। खर की मृत्यु का समाचार सुनकर उसकी प्रतिक्रिया 'क्रुद्धः' (क्रोधित) और 'संरक्त लोचनः' (खूनी लाल आँखों वाली) है। 'दशग्रीव' नाम का प्रयोग उसके विराट और भयानक रूप को इंगित करता है। उसका क्रोध इतना तीव्र है कि ऐसा प्रतीत होता है जैसे वह अपनी दृष्टि के तेज से ही संदेशवाहक अकंपन को भस्म कर देगा ('निर्दहन् इव')। यह राजा का भय है—बुरा समाचार लाने वाले पर ही उसका क्रोध बरसता है। यह रावण के तामसिक और विनाशकारी स्वभाव का परिचायक है।
