तत् एवम् उक्त्वा प्रययौ खर युक्तेन रावणः ।
रथेन आदित्य वर्णेन दिशः सर्वाः प्रकाशयन् ॥३-३१-३४॥
tat evam uktvā prayayau khara yuktena rāvaṇaḥ |
rathena āditya varṇena diśaḥ sarvāḥ prakāśayan ॥3-31-34॥
Translation
Having spoken thus, Ravana set out in a chariot yoked with mules, which was the color of the sun, illuminating all directions.
हिंदी अनुवाद
ऐसा कहकर रावण खच्चरों (गधों) से जुते हुए, सूर्य के समान रंग वाले रथ पर सवार होकर, सभी दिशाओं को प्रकाशित करते हुए चल पड़ा।
English Commentary
The imagery here presents a striking contrast typical of Ravana. He departs in a chariot that shines with the brilliance of the sun (aditya varnena), illuminating the sky, symbolizing his immense power and splendor. However, it is yoked with khara (mules or donkeys). In poetic tradition, donkeys are often associated with tamas (darkness/ignorance) or inauspiciousness, while the sun represents sattva and truth. This juxtaposition reflects Ravana's nature: a being of magnificent capability and knowledge, driven by base, obstinate desires. He radiates light physically but carries darkness in his intent.
