स रथो राक्षस इंद्रस्य नक्षत्र पथगो महान् ।
चंचूर्यमानः शुशुभे जलदे चंद्रमा इव ॥३-३१-३५॥
sa ratho rākṣasa indrasya nakṣatra pathago mahān |
caṃcūryamānaḥ śuśubhe jalade caṃdramā iva ॥3-31-35॥
Translation
That great chariot of the Lord of Rakshasas, traveling along the path of the stars, moving swiftly/hovering, shone like the moon amidst the clouds.

राक्षस राज का वह विशाल रथ, जो नक्षत्र-पथ (आकाश) में गमन कर रहा था, बादलों के बीच चलते हुए चंद्रमा की भाँति सुशोभित हो रहा था।
English Commentary
Valmiki employs a celestial simile to describe Ravana's flight. The chariot travels via the nakshatra patha (the path of the stars/sky). The imagery shifts from the harsh brightness of the sun to the cooler, sometimes eerie beauty of the moon moving through clouds (jalade chandrama iva). This implies a swift, gliding motion (camcuryamanah). It highlights the magical and majestic nature of Ravana's technology and power. Even as he proceeds to commit a heinous crime, the poet acknowledges the grandeur of the Rakshasa King's presence in the heavens.
