तम् स्वयम् पूजयित्वा तु आसनेन उदकेन च ।
अर्थ उपहितया वाचा मारीचो वाक्यम् अब्रवीत् ॥३-३१-३७॥
tam svayam pūjayitvā tu āsanena udakena ca |
artha upahitayā vācā mārīco vākyam abravīt ॥3-31-37॥
Translation
Having personally worshipped him with a seat and water, Maricha spoke words that were meaningful (endowed with purpose).

स्वयं आसन और जल (अर्घ्य-पाद्य) से उनका पूजन करके, मारीच ने अर्थ-युक्त (सारगर्भित) वाणी में यह बात कही।
English Commentary
Maricha strictly follows the etiquette of welcoming a guest and a superior. He offers a seat and water (asana and udaka), performing the rites personally. The phrase artha upahitaya vaca is key—it means Maricha's speech was not merely polite pleasantries but carried weight, significance, and specific intent. Maricha is cautious; he knows Ravana does not visit without a selfish or dangerous motive. His words are carefully chosen to probe the reason for this visit while maintaining the respect due to his sovereign.

अतिथि सत्कार की वैदिक और सामाजिक परंपरा का निर्वाह करते हुए, मारीच ने रावण को आसन दिया और जल से उनका पूजन किया। रावण राजा है, इसलिए मारीच ने 'स्वयं' यह सब किया, सेवकों पर नहीं छोड़ा। सत्कार के बाद, मारीच 'अर्थ उपहितया वाचा' (प्रयोजन से युक्त वाणी) बोलता है। मारीच ज्ञानी है और परिस्थितियों को समझने में कुशल है; वह व्यर्थ की बातें नहीं करता। वह जानना चाहता है कि रावण का अचानक आगमन किस प्रयोजन से हुआ है, क्योंकि वह रावण के स्वभाव से भली-भांति परिचित है।
