कश्चित् सुकुशलम् राजन् लोकानाम् राक्षसाधिप ।
आशंके न अथ जाने त्वम् यतः तूर्णम् उपागतम् ॥३-३१-३८॥
kaścit sukuśalam rājan lokānām rākṣasādhipa |
āśaṃke na atha jāne tvam yataḥ tūrṇam upāgatam ॥3-31-38॥
Translation
"O King, Lord of Rakshasas, is all well with your subjects? I am apprehensive and I do not know [the reason], for you have arrived so hastily."
हिंदी अनुवाद
हे राजन्! हे राक्षसाधिप! क्या (राक्षस) लोक में सब कुशल-मंगल तो है? मुझे आशंका हो रही है और मैं समझ नहीं पा रहा हूँ, क्योंकि आप बहुत शीघ्रता से (यहाँ) आए हैं।
English Commentary
Maricha voices his anxiety. Addressing Ravana respectfully, he immediately inquires about the welfare of the Rakshasa world. The core of his concern lies in Ravana's haste (turnam). Kings usually travel with entourage and pomp; a hurried, solitary journey signals emergency or desperation. Maricha admits his apprehension (ashanke), intuitively sensing that Ravana's arrival brings trouble. This question sets a tone of foreboding, as Maricha attempts to diagnose the crisis before Ravana reveals his disastrous plan.

मारीच का भय और चिंता यहाँ स्पष्ट होती है। वह रावण से पूछता है कि क्या लंका और राक्षस प्रजा सुरक्षित है। 'तूर्णम् उपागतम्' (शीघ्रता से आए हो) रावण की व्यग्रता को इंगित करता है। मारीच जानता है कि राजा का अकेले और इतनी हड़बड़ी में आना किसी संकट का संकेत है। चूँकि मारीच पहले ही राम के बाण का स्वाद चख चुका है, उसके मन में अनिष्ट की आशंका (आशंके) है। वह रावण के चेहरे के भाव और उसकी गति देखकर समझ गया है कि कुछ गंभीर घटित हुआ है या होने वाला है।
