एवम् उक्तो महातेजा मारीचेन स रावण ।
ततः पश्चात् इदम् वाक्यम् अब्रवीत् वाक्य कोविदः ॥३-३१-३९॥
evam ukto mahātejā mārīcena sa rāvaṇa |
tataḥ paścāt idam vākyam abravīt vākya kovidaḥ ॥3-31-39॥
Translation
Thus addressed by Maricha, the highly radiant Ravana, who was skilled in speech, then spoke these words.
हिंदी अनुवाद
मारीच के द्वारा इस प्रकार कहे जाने पर, महातेजस्वी और वाणी में निपुण उस रावण ने तदनंतर (उसके बाद) यह वचन कहा।
English Commentary
This concluding verse of the section characterizes Ravana as he prepares to respond. He is described as mahateja (of great splendor) and, crucially, vakya-kovidah (an expert in speech/eloquent). This epithet is significant because Ravana needs to manipulate Maricha. He is aware of Maricha's past trauma regarding Rama. Therefore, Ravana must use his rhetorical skills to persuade or coerce Maricha into participating in a mission that Maricha knows is suicidal. The stage is set for a clash of wills between the arrogant King and his terrified, yet wise, uncle.

इस सर्ग का अंतिम श्लोक संवाद के अगले चरण की भूमिका है। रावण को 'महातेजा' (महान कांति वाला) और 'वाक्य कोविदः' (बातचीत में चतुर/निपुण) कहा गया है। 'वाक्य कोविदः' विशेषण यहाँ बहुत महत्वपूर्ण है। रावण जानता है कि मारीच राम से डरता है और आसानी से सहायता के लिए तैयार नहीं होगा। इसलिए, रावण अपनी वाकपटुता का प्रयोग करके मारीच को मनाने, डराने या फुसलाने की तैयारी कर रहा है। वह सीधे आदेश देने के बजाय, कूटनीतिक रूप से अपनी बात रखेगा।
