कर्मणा अनेन केन असि कापथम् प्रतिपादितः ।
सुख सुप्तस्य ते राजन् प्रहृतम् केन मूर्धनि ॥३-३१-४५॥
karmaṇā anena kena asi kāpatham pratipāditaḥ |
sukha suptasya te rājan prahṛtam kena mūrdhani ॥3-31-45॥
Translation
"By suggesting this deed, who has led you onto the wrong path? O King, who has struck you on the head while you were sleeping happily?"

इस कर्म के द्वारा किसने आपको कुमार्ग (कापथ) पर लगा दिया है? हे राजन्! आप जब सुखपूर्वक सो रहे थे, तब किसने आपके सिर पर प्रहार किया है?
English Commentary
Maricha frames the situation as a rude awakening from safety. Ravana was "sleeping happily"—secure in his power and kingdom—until this bad advice struck him "on the head." This implies that the idea of abducting Sita is a sudden, violent intrusion into a stable existence. By asking who led him to this kapatham (bad/evil path), Maricha suggests that Ravana has been led astray from the path of kingship and survival. It portrays the advice not as an opportunity for revenge, but as an unprovoked assault on Ravana's own well-being.

मारीच रावण की स्थिति को 'सुख सुप्तस्य' (सुखपूर्वक सोया हुआ) बताता है, जिसका अर्थ है कि लंका में रावण सुरक्षित और समृद्ध था। सीता के अपहरण का विचार उस सुरक्षा को भंग करने वाला है। 'सिर पर प्रहार' करना एक रूपक है—किसी ने रावण की बुद्धि को भ्रष्ट कर दिया है या उसे जगाकर मृत्यु के सामने खड़ा कर दिया है। 'कापथ' (बुरा रास्ता) दर्शाता है कि यह मार्ग धर्म और नीति दोनों के विरुद्ध है। मारीच रावण को यह अहसास दिलाना चाहता है कि उसकी शांति भंग करने वाला उसका मित्र नहीं हो सकता।
