असौ रण अन्तः स्थित संधि वालः विदग्ध रक्षो मृग हा नृसिंहः ।
सुप्तः त्वया बोधयितुम् न शक्यः शरांग पुर्णो निशित असि दंष्ट्रः ॥३-३१-४७॥
asau raṇa antaḥ sthita sandhi vālaḥ vidagdha rakṣo mṛga hā nṛsiṃhaḥ |
suptaḥ tvayā bodhayitum na śakyaḥ śarāṅgapūrṇo niśita asi daṃṣṭraḥ ॥3-31-47॥
Translation
"He stands firm in battle (his tail joints poised), he is the Man-Lion (Nrisimha) who kills the clever Rakshasa-deer. His body is filled with arrows (limbs), and his sharp sword is his fang. It is not possible (safe) for you to awaken this sleeping lion."

जो युद्ध के मध्य में जमा रहता है (संधि रूपी पूंछ वाला), जो चतुर (विद्वान) राक्षस रूपी मृगों को मारने वाला नृसिंह है; जिसके शरीर के अंग बाणों से पूर्ण हैं और तीक्ष्ण तलवार जिसकी दाढ़ (दांत) है; उस सोए हुए सिंह (राम) को जगाना तुम्हारे लिए संभव (उचित) नहीं है।
English Commentary
Continuing the metaphors, Maricha depicts Rama as a Lion (Nrisimha - implyig ferocity and divinity) and the Rakshasas as mere deer (mriga). The metaphor extends to weaponry: Rama's arrows are the lion's body/hair, and his sword is the sharp fang (nishita asi damshtrah). Maricha warns Ravana not to "wake the sleeping lion." Currently, Rama is peaceful, but abduction will provoke his predatory wrath. Maricha places the Rakshasas at the bottom of the food chain, describing them as prey to Rama's predator, stripping away Ravana's delusion of superiority.

अब मारीच राम की तुलना 'नृसिंह' (नर-सिंह) से करता है, जो राक्षसों के संहारक हैं। यहाँ 'विग्ध रक्षो मृग हा' का अर्थ है वह जो कपटी राक्षसों का शिकार वैसे ही करता है जैसे शेर हिरणों का। राम के बाण ही उस शेर के रोएँ/अंग हैं और उनकी तलवार तीखी दाढ़ है। मारीच रावण को चेतावनी देता है कि राम अभी 'सुप्त' (शांत) हैं, उन्हें छेड़कर जगाओ मत। यदि वह जाग गए (क्रुद्ध हो गए), तो तुम्हें और तुम्हारी सेना को खा जाएंगे। यह रावण को यह याद दिलाने के लिए है कि राक्षस, राम के सामने केवल 'मृग' (शिकार) हैं।
