कालस्य च अपि अहम् कलो दहेयम् अपि पावकम् ।
मृत्युम् मरण धर्मेण संयोजयितुम् उत्सहे ॥ ॥३-३१-६॥
kālasya ca api aham kālo daheyam api pāvakam । mṛtyum maraṇa dharmeṇa saṃyojayitum utsahe ॥ ॥3-31-6॥
Translation
"I am the Time (Death) of Time itself. I can burn even the Fire. I am capable of subjecting Death himself to the laws of mortality."

"मैं काल (समय/मृत्यु) का भी महाकाल हूँ। मैं अग्नि को भी जला सकता हूँ। मैं स्वयं मृत्यु को भी मृत्यु के धर्म से संयुक्त करने (मारने) का साहस रखता हूँ।"
English Commentary
This represents the zenith of Ravana's megalomania. He employs metaphysical paradoxes to describe his power. By claiming to be the "Death of Death" (Kalasya Kala) and the "Burner of Fire," he asserts dominion over the fundamental elements and inevitable forces of the universe. He believes he has transcended the natural law of entropy and mortality. In a literary sense, this builds the villain's stature to such a height that Rama’s eventual victory will appear all the more miraculous.

यह रावण के संवादों में सबसे प्रसिद्ध और भयानक उद्घोषणाओं में से एक है—'कालस्य च अपि अहम् कालो' (मैं काल का भी काल हूँ)। यहाँ विरोधाभास अलंकार (Paradox) का सुंदर प्रयोग है: अग्नि जो सबको जलाती है, रावण उसे भी जलाने का दावा करता है; मृत्यु जो सबको मारती है, रावण उसे भी मारने की क्षमता रखता है। यह अतिशयोक्ति नहीं, बल्कि उसके तप और वरदानों से उत्पन्न आत्मविश्वास है। वह स्वयं को प्रकृति के नियमों से ऊपर मानता है।
