Srimad Valmiki Ramayana
दूषणम् च खरम् चैव हतम् त्रिशिरसम् रणे ।
दृष्ट्वा पुनर् महानादम् ननाद जलद उपमा ॥३-३२-२॥
dūṣaṇam ca kharam caiva hatam triśirasam raṇe |
dṛṣṭvā punar mahānādam nanāda jalada upamā ॥3-32-2॥
Translation
Having seen Dushana, Khara, and Trishiras killed in battle, she (Shurpanakha) roared a great sound again, resembling a (thundering) cloud.
हिंदी अनुवाद
दूषण, खर और त्रिशिरा को युद्ध में मारा गया देखकर, वह (शूर्पणखा) पुनः वर्षाकालीन बादल की तरह (गरज कर) जोर से चिल्लाई (भयानक नाद किया)।
English Commentary
This verse captures the raw intensity of Shurpanakha's grief and rage. Witnessing the death of her protectors and brothers—Khara, Dushana, and Trishiras—she does not merely weep but emits a mahanadam (great roar). The simile jalada upama (like a rain cloud) suggests a thunderous, deep sound that reverberates with power and menace, rather than a pitiful cry. It marks the transition from the battlefield of Janasthana to the court of Lanka; her roar is the signal that the conflict has escalated beyond a local skirmish.

यहाँ शूर्पणखा के शोक और क्रोध की तीव्रता का वर्णन है। अपने रक्षक और भाई—खर, दूषण और त्रिशिरा—को मृत देखकर उसका विलाप केवल रोना नहीं, बल्कि 'महानाद' (भयानक गर्जना) है। उपमा 'जलद उपमा' (बादल के समान) यह दर्शाती है कि उसकी आवाज में मेघ-गर्जना जैसी गूंज और कंपन था। यह नाद भय और प्रतिशोध की घोषणा है। जनस्थान का पूरा नेतृत्व समाप्त हो चुका है, और अब वह इस विनाश का समाचार लेकर लंका की ओर प्रस्थान करने वाली है।
