आसने सूपविष्टम् तम् काले कालम् इव उद्यतम् ।
राक्षसेन्द्रम् महाभागम् पौलस्त्य कुल नन्दनम् ॥ ॥३-३२-२३॥
Āsane sūpaviṣṭam tam kāle kālam iva udyatam । Rākṣasendram mahābhāgam paulastya kula nandanam ॥ ॥3-32-23॥
Translation
He was seated comfortably on his throne, appearing like Time (Death) itself risen at the end of the world; the Lord of Rakshasas, the illustrious one, the delighter of the lineage of Paulastya.

जो (सिंहासन) आसन पर भली-भांति बैठा था, जो प्रलयकाल में उदित हुए यमराज (काल) के समान प्रतीत हो रहा था; जो राक्षसों का स्वामी, महाभाग्यशाली और पुलस्त्य कुल को आनंद देने वाला है।
English Commentary
This verse captures Ravana's imposing presence on the throne. He is seated majestically (supavishtam). The simile used is powerful: he looks like Kala (Time/Death) ready to strike at the end of an eon. This suggests a dormant but terrifying potential for destruction. Yet, simultaneously, he is described with positive epithets: Mahabhagam (possessing great fortune/merit) and Paulastya kula nandanam (the joy of the Paulastya lineage). This acknowledges his high birth and the pride his lineage takes in him, adding layers to his villainy—he is not a mindless beast, but a fallen noble of immense stature.

रावण की सभा का दृश्य है। वह आसन पर 'सूपविष्टम्' (राजसी ठाठ से जमा हुआ) है। उसकी तुलना 'काले कालम् इव' (प्रलय के समय साक्षात काल/यमराज) से की गई है, जो उसकी संहारक शक्ति को दर्शाता है। साथ ही उसे 'महाभागम्' (महान ऐश्वर्य वाला) और 'पौलस्त्य कुल नन्दनम्' (पुलस्त्य ऋषि के वंश का आनंद/दीपक) कहा गया है। यह विरोधाभास रावण के चरित्र की धुरी है—वह एक उच्च कुल (ब्राह्मण वंश) का दीपक है, महान है, लेकिन काल के समान भयानक है। शूर्पणखा उसे एक रक्षक और एक संहारक, दोनों रूपों में देख रही है।
