Srimad Valmiki Ramayana
आत्मवद्भिः विगृह्य त्वम् देव गंधर्व दानवैः ।
अयुक्त चारः चपलः कथम् राजा भविष्यसि ॥ ॥३-३३-७॥
Ātmavadbhiḥ vigṛhya tvam deva gandharva dānavaiḥ । Ayukta cāraḥ capalaḥ katham rājā bhaviṣyasi ॥ ॥3-33-7॥
Translation
Having made enemies with the self-possessed (powerful) gods, Gandharvas, and Danavas; how will you remain king, being without spies and fickle-minded?

(तुमने) आत्मबल से संपन्न देवताओं, गंधर्वों और दानवों से बैर (विग्रह) मोल लिया है; (फिर भी) तुम गुप्तचरों से रहित और चंचल स्वभाव के हो। तुम राजा कैसे बने रहोगे?
English Commentary
Shurpanakha points out the precarious geopolitical position Ravana has placed himself in. He has antagonized the most powerful beings in the cosmos (Devas, Gandharvas, Danavas). Logic dictates that a ruler with such enemies should be hyper-vigilant. Instead, Ravana is chapala (fickle/careless) and lacks intelligence assets (ayukta chara). The rhetorical question, "How will you remain king?", implies that his reign is unsustainable. He is sitting on a powder keg of his own making, without even watching the fuse.

यहाँ रावण की विदेश नीति (Foreign Policy) की आलोचना है। उसने विश्व की सबसे शक्तिशाली शक्तियों (देव, दानव, गंधर्व) से दुश्मनी ('विगृह्य') कर ली है। जब शत्रु इतने प्रबल हों, तो राजा को अत्यंत सतर्क होना चाहिए। लेकिन रावण 'चपलः' (चंचल/अस्थिर) है और उसके पास सूचना तंत्र (गुप्तचर) नहीं है। शूर्पणखा प्रश्न करती है—"कथम् राजा भविष्यसि" (तुम राजा कैसे बने रहोगे?)। यह केवल पद जाने का डर नहीं, बल्कि जीवन जाने की चेतावनी है। इतने शत्रुओं के बीच लापरवाही आत्महत्या के समान है।
