Srimad Valmiki Ramayana
प्रतिकूलितुम् इच्छामि न हि वाक्यम् इदम् त्वया ।
शापितो मम पादाभ्याम् गम्यताम् वत्स मा चिरम् ॥ ॥३-३४-१३॥
pratikūlitum icchāmi na hi vākyam idam tvayā । śāpito mama pādābhyām gamyatām vatsa mā ciram ॥ ॥3-34-13॥
Translation
I do not wish for this command to be opposed by you. You are sworn by my feet. Go, my dear one, do not delay.
हिंदी अनुवाद
मैं नहीं चाहता कि तुम मेरे इस वचन (आदेश) का विरोध करो। तुम्हें मेरे चरणों की शपथ है, हे वत्स! जाओ, देर मत करो।
English Commentary
This verse highlights the tension between Lakshmana’s devotion (which demands he stay and fight) and his duty to obey. Rama anticipates Lakshmana’s resistance to leaving him alone in battle. To override this, Rama uses the ultimate imperative: śāpito mama pādābhyām (sworn by my feet). In the hierarchy of respect, swearing by the guru/elder's feet binds the subordinate completely. The juxtaposition of the command with the tender vocative vatsa (dear child/brother) softens the blow, framing the separation as a necessity of love and safety rather than a dismissal of Lakshmana’s valor.

यह श्लोक आपातकाल में नेतृत्व की दृढ़ता को दर्शाता है। लक्ष्मण स्वभाव से राम को छोड़कर जाने वाले नहीं हैं, विशेषकर युद्ध के समय। राम इसे जानते हैं, इसलिए वे भावनात्मक और नैतिक दबाव का प्रयोग करते हैं। 'शापितो मम पादाभ्याम्' (मेरे चरणों की शपथ है)—यह एक अत्यंत गंभीर शपथ है जिसे लक्ष्मण कभी नहीं तोड़ सकते। राम उन्हें 'वत्स' (प्यारे भाई/बच्चे) भी कहते हैं, जो स्नेह और अधिकार का मिश्रण है। राम जानते हैं कि लक्ष्मण का तर्क वितर्क करने का समय नहीं है ('मा चिरम्' - देर मत करो), इसलिए वे सेनापति की भांति अंतिम आदेश देते हैं।
