Srimad Valmiki Ramayana
अमरषी दुर्जयो जेता विक्रान्तो बुद्धिमान् बली ।
रामस्य दक्षिणे बाहुः नित्यम् प्राणो बहिः चरः ॥ ॥३-३४-१६॥
amarṣī durjayo jetā vikrānto buddhimān balī । rāmasya dakṣiṇe bāhuḥ nityam prāṇo bahiḥ caraḥ ॥ ॥3-34-16॥
Translation
He is intolerant of insult, unconquerable, a victor, valorous, intelligent, and strong. He is Rama's right arm and his very life breath wandering outside.
हिंदी अनुवाद
(लक्ष्मण) अमर्षी (अपमान न सहने वाले), दुर्जय, विजेता, विक्रांत, बुद्धिमान और बलवान हैं। वे राम की दाहिनी भुजा हैं और मानो उनके शरीर से बाहर विचरने वाले प्राण हैं।
English Commentary
This verse contains one of the most famous metaphors in the Ramayana describing the fraternal bond. Lakshmana is defined as prāṇo bahiḥ caraḥ (life-breath moving externally). This implies that Lakshmana is essential to Rama's existence. The list of adjectives—amarṣī (indignant/aggressive), durjayo (invincible), buddhimān (intelligent)—paints Lakshmana as a complete warrior, balancing physical might with tactical intellect. Calling him the 'right arm' signifies that while Rama is the head/will, Lakshmana is the force that executes that will. Shurpanakha warns Ravana that the duo is organically inseparable.
