तत् कार्मुकैः आभरणैः रथैः च तत् वर्माभिः च अग्नि समान वर्णैः ।
बभूव सैन्यम् पिशित अशनिनाम् सूर्य उदये नीलम् इव अभ्र जालम् ॥३-३४-३६॥
Tat kārmukaiḥ ābharaṇaiḥ rathaiḥ ca Tat varmābhiḥ ca agni samāna varṇaiḥ |
Babhūva sainyam piśita aśaninām Sūrya udaye nīlam iva abhra jālam ॥3-34-36॥
Translation
With those bows, ornaments, chariots, and armor shining like fire, that army of flesh-eating demons appeared like a mass of blue clouds at sunrise.

उन धनुषों, आभूषणों, रथों और अग्नि के समान चमकते हुए कवचों के कारण, वह मांसभक्षी राक्षसों की सेना सूर्योदय के समय नीले बादलों के समूह जैसी प्रतीत हुई (जिसमें सूर्य की किरणें चमक रही हों)।
English Commentary
Valmiki paints a vivid tableau of the opposing army using contrasting colors and light. The dark complexions of the pishita-ashanin (flesh-eaters) form a backdrop akin to a "mass of blue clouds" (neelam abhra jalam). Against this darkness, their fire-colored armor and golden ornaments flash brilliantly, evoking the image of sunrise breaking through storm clouds. This simile captures the sheer magnitude and menacing beauty of the demon army. It also foreshadows the coming conflict: just as the sun eventually pierces and disperses the clouds, the brilliance of Rama's arrows is destined to pierce through this dark mass of demons.

इस श्लोक में राक्षसी सेना का दृश्य-वर्णन (Visual Imagery) अत्यंत सुंदर है। यहाँ 'विरोधाभास' और 'उपमा' का अद्भुत संगम है। राक्षस 'नील वर्ण' (काले या गहरे नीले) के हैं, जो अंधकार और पाप का प्रतीक हैं, जबकि उनके अस्त्र-शस्त्र और कवच 'अग्नि समान' चमकदार हैं। कवि ने इसकी तुलना सूर्योदय के समय के बादलों से की है। जैसे काले बादलों के बीच सूर्य की लालिमा और चमक दिखाई देती है, वैसे ही काली राक्षसी सेना के बीच उनके स्वर्णिम कवच चमक रहे हैं। यह वर्णन युद्ध की आसन्न विभीषिका को एक कलात्मक रूप देता है। वाल्मीकि जी ने यहाँ दिखाया है कि सौंदर्य केवल सात्विक वस्तुओं में ही नहीं, बल्कि युद्ध की भयावहता में भी कवि की दृष्टि से देखा जा सकता है।
