कः च रामः कथम् वीर्यः किम् रूपः किम् पराक्रमः।
किम् अर्थम् दण्डकारण्यम् प्रविष्टः च सुदुस्तरम्॥ ॥३-३४-४॥
kaḥ ca rāmaḥ katham vīryaḥ kim rūpaḥ kim parākramaḥ। kim artham daṇḍakāraṇyam praviṣṭaḥ ca sudustaram॥ ॥3-34-4॥
Translation
And who is this Rama? What is the nature of his strength? What does he look like? What is his prowess? And for what purpose has he entered the impassable Dandaka forest?

और वह राम कौन है? उसका बल कैसा है? उसका रूप कैसा है? उसका पराक्रम क्या है? और वह किस प्रयोजन से इस अति दुस्तर दण्डकारण्य में प्रविष्ट हुआ है?
English Commentary
This verse encapsulates the "intelligence gathering" phase of warfare. Ravana fires a rapid volley of interrogatives regarding Rama: his identity, virulence, appearance, valor, and motive. The specific phrasing katham vīryaḥ asks about the quality or source of his strength. Ravana is particularly perplexed by Rama's presence in the sudustaram (difficult to traverse/impassable) Dandaka forest. It reveals Ravana's skepticism—he cannot fathom a mere human surviving in his territory without significant power or a specific, driving purpose.
