Srimad Valmiki Ramayana
हस्ती अश्व रथ गाढानि नगराणि विलोकयन् ।
तम् समम् सर्वतः स्निग्धम् मृदु संस्पर्श मारुतम् ॥ ॥३-३५-२६॥
Hasti aśva ratha gāḍhāni nagarāṇi vilokayan । Tam samam sarvataḥ snigdham mṛdu saṃsparśa mārutam ॥ ॥3-35-26॥
Translation
While looking at cities crowded with elephants, horses, and chariots, he saw that level plain which was smooth everywhere and possessed a gentle, caressing breeze.

हाथियों, घोड़ों और रथों से भरे हुए नगरों को देखते हुए, (रावण ने) उस समतल, सब ओर से चिकने (सुंदर) और कोमल स्पर्श वाली हवा से युक्त स्थान को देखा।
English Commentary
Ravana observes the bustling activity of civilization from above—cities dense (gāḍhāni) with military might (elephants, horses, chariots). He then shifts his focus to a specific terrain closer to his destination. This land is described as samam (level/flat) and snigdham (smooth/glossy), perhaps indicating a polished coastal plain or a lush meadow. The mṛdu saṃsparśa mārutam (wind soft to the touch) highlights the sensory pleasure of the location. The transition from busy cities to this serene plain signals his arrival at the sanctuary of the ascetics.

इस श्लोक में रावण की यात्रा का 'विहंगम दृश्य' (bird's-eye view) मिलता है। नीचे समृद्ध नगर हैं जिनमें चतुरंगिणी सेना (हाथी, घोड़े, रथ) की चहल-पहल है। इसके बाद वह एक विशेष स्थान पर पहुँचता है जो 'समम्' (समतल) और 'स्निग्धम्' (मनोहारी/चिकना) है। यहाँ की हवा 'मृदु संस्पर्श' (कोमल स्पर्श वाली) है, जो समुद्र तटीय मंद हवा (sea breeze) का वर्णन है। यह विरोधाभास रोचक है: एक तरफ शोर से भरे नगर, और दूसरी तरफ मारीच के आश्रम की ओर ले जाने वाला शांत और सुरम्य वातावरण।
