अजा बभूवुः धूम्राः च संगताः परमर्षयः ।
तेषाम् दयाअर्थम् गरुडः ताम् शाखाम् शत योजनाम् ॥ ॥३-३५-३१॥
Ajā babhūvuḥ dhūmrāḥ ca saṃgatāḥ paramarṣayaḥ । Teṣām dayārtham garuḍaḥ tām śākhām śata yojanām ॥ ॥3-35-31॥
Translation
The Aja and Dhumra great sages were also gathered there. Out of compassion for them, Garuda [held] that branch measuring a hundred yojanas...
हिंदी अनुवाद
(वहाँ) आज और धूम्र नामक परम ऋषि भी एकत्र थे। उन पर दया करने के लिए (उन्हें बचाने के लिए), गरुड़ ने उस सौ योजन लंबी शाखा को... (अगले श्लोक से जारी)।
English Commentary
The list of endangered sages concludes with the Aja and Dhumra orders. The pivot of the story is the phrase teṣām dayārtham (for the sake of compassion towards them). Garuda, realizing the danger, acts not out of pride but out of reverence for the sages. He catches the falling branch. The repetition of śata yojanām (hundred yojanas) reiterates the magnitude of the burden he undertakes—he is now carrying a continent-sized branch along with two giant animals.

ऋषियों की सूची में 'अजा' और 'धूम्राः' (जो संभवतः धुएं का पान करते हैं या धुएं के रंग के हैं) का नाम जुड़ता है। गरुड़ को तुरंत अपनी गलती का अहसास होता है। यहाँ 'दयाअर्थम्' (दया के लिए/करुणा वश) शब्द अत्यंत महत्वपूर्ण है। शक्ति का प्रदर्शन गौण हो जाता है और ऋषियों की रक्षा प्राथमिक हो जाती है। गरुड़ ने उस गिरती हुई विशाल शाखा को, जो सौ योजन लंबी थी, गिरने नहीं दिया बल्कि उसे पकड़ लिया। यह गरुड़ के चरित्र (धर्म और बल का समन्वय) को स्थापित करता है।
