तत्र कृष्ण अजिन धरम् जटा वल्कल धारिणम् ।
ददर्श नियत आहारम् मारीचम् नाम राक्षसम् ॥ ॥३-३५-३८॥
Tatra kṛṣṇa ajina dharam jaṭā valkala dhāriṇam। Dadarśa niyata āhāram mārīcam nāma rākṣasam ॥ ॥3-35-38॥
Translation
There he saw the Rakshasa named Maricha, wearing the black antelope skin, bearing matted locks and bark garments, and observing a restricted diet.

वहाँ उसने काला मृगचर्म पहने हुए, जटा और वल्कल (पेड़ की छाल) धारण किए हुए तथा संयमित आहार वाले 'मारीच' नामक राक्षस को देखा।
English Commentary
This visual description of Maricha characterizes his complete transformation. No longer the warrior who attacked Vishvamitra's sacrifice, he is now an ascetic wearing kṛṣṇa ajina (black buck skin) and valkala (bark), with jaṭā (matted hair). The phrase niyata āhāram (restricted/regulated diet) confirms he has suppressed his rakshasa instincts (carnivorous hunger) through discipline. It sets up the conflict: Ravana wants the "old" Maricha (the monster), but finds a "new" Maricha (the monk).

मारीच का यह रूप रावण के लिए आश्चर्यजनक है। वह एक राक्षस है, लेकिन उसका वेश पूर्णतः एक तपस्वी (ऋषि) का है। 'कृष्ण अजिन' (काला हिरण का चमड़ा) और 'जटा वल्कल' वानप्रस्थ जीवन के चिह्न हैं। 'नियत आहारम्' बताता है कि उसने राक्षसी वृत्ति (मांस भक्षण आदि) त्याग दी है। मारीच ने डर के कारण राम की शरण या धर्म की शरण ले ली है। रावण का विलासी वेश और मारीच का तपस्वी वेश आमने-सामने हैं।
