मेघ प्रतिम नादेन स तेन धनद अनुजः ।
राक्षसाधिपतिः श्रीमान् ययौ नद नदी पतिम् ॥३-३५-७॥
Megha pratima nādena sa tena dhanada anujaḥ |
Rākṣasādhipatiḥ śrīmān yayau nada nadī patim ॥3-35-7॥
Translation
With that chariot sounding like a thundercloud, the younger brother of Kubera, the glorious Lord of Rakshasas, set out towards the Lord of Rivers and Streams (the Ocean).

मेघ के समान गंभीर गर्जना करने वाले उस रथ के द्वारा, कुबेर के छोटे भाई (धनदानुज), श्रीमान राक्षसराज रावण ने समुद्र (नद-नदी-पति) की ओर प्रस्थान किया।
English Commentary
The auditory imagery reinforces Ravana's power; his chariot rumbles like a thundercloud (megha pratima nādena). Valmiki uses the epithet Dhanadānujaḥ (younger brother of the Wealth-Giver, Kubera) to remind the reader of Ravana's high lineage and his usurpation of Kubera’s status (and Pushpaka, though here he uses a chariot). He travels toward the Nada-nadi-patim (the Lord of rivers, the Ocean), setting the stage for his crossing to the hermitage of Maricha. The journey represents a movement from his secure capital into the wild expanse where his fate will be sealed.

रावण को यहाँ 'धनदानुज' (कुबेर का अनुज) कहा गया है। यह संबोधन व्यंग्यात्मक भी हो सकता है और उसकी कुलीनता का परिचायक भी—वह एक महान वंश (विश्रवा मुनि के पुत्र) से है, किन्तु कर्म राक्षसी हैं। रथ की ध्वनि 'मेघ प्रतिम' (बादलों की गर्जन जैसी) है, जो वातावरण में भय उत्पन्न करती है। वह 'नद-नदी-पतिम्' (समुद्र) की ओर जा रहा है, क्योंकि मारीच का आश्रम समुद्र तट के पार या किसी द्वीप पर एकांत में स्थित था। 'श्रीमान' शब्द रावण के राजसी तेज को बनाए रखता है, भले ही वह पाप कर्म के लिए जा रहा हो।
