Srimad Valmiki Ramayana
एतत् अर्थम् अहम् प्राप्तः त्वत् समीपम् निशाचर ।
शृणु तत् कर्म साहाय्ये यत् कार्यम् वचनात् मम ॥३-३६-१७॥
Etat artham aham prāptaḥ tvat samīpam niśācara । Śṛṇu tat karma sāhāyye yat kāryam vacanāt mama ॥3-36-17॥
Translation
O Night-wanderer (Nishacara), I have come to you for this very purpose. Listen to the task that must be done by you to assist me, upon my command.
हिंदी अनुवाद
हे निशाचर! इसी प्रयोजन से मैं तुम्हारे पास आया हूँ। मेरी सहायता के लिए तुम्हें जो कार्य मेरे वचन (आदेश) से करना है, उसे सुनो।
English Commentary
Ravana addresses Maricha with a mix of kingly authority and expectation. By using the vocative "Nishacara" (Night-wanderer), he highlights their shared demonic heritage. Ravana wastes no time with pleasantries, stating explicitly that he has approached Maricha for a specific purpose. The phrase "vacanāt mama" (upon my word/command) indicates that this is not a request but a directive. It underscores Ravana’s arrogance; he assumes Maricha’s compliance is guaranteed. He is setting the stage to exploit Maricha’s magical abilities for a task that requires deception rather than brute force.

रावण यहाँ मारीच को एक राजा के अधिकार और एक मित्र की अपेक्षा के साथ संबोधित कर रहा है। 'निशाचर' शब्द का प्रयोग यहाँ राक्षसी प्रवृत्ति और रात्रि में विचरण करने की उनकी साझा प्रकृति को दर्शाता है। रावण सीधे विषय पर आता है, यह स्पष्ट करते हुए कि वह केवल औपचारिक भेंट के लिए नहीं, बल्कि एक विशिष्ट 'प्रयोजन' (सीता हरण) के लिए आया है। वह मारीच की सहमति नहीं माँग रहा, बल्कि उसे आदेश दे रहा है ('वचनात् मम' - मेरे कहने से), जो रावण के अहंकार और अपनी शक्ति पर विश्वास को प्रदर्शित करता है। वह जानता है कि मारीच के पास मायावी शक्तियाँ हैं जो इस कार्य के लिए अनिवार्य हैं।
