तस्य राम कथाम् श्रुत्वा मारीचस्य महात्मनः ।
शुष्कम् समभवत् वक्त्रम् परित्रस्तो बभूव च ॥३-३६-२२॥
Tasya rāma kathām śrutvā mārīcasya mahātmanaḥ । Śuṣkam samabhavat vaktram paritrasto babhūva ca ॥3-36-22॥
Translation
Hearing that talk of his (Ravana) concerning Rama, the mouth of the high-souled Maricha went dry, and he became terrified.

रावण की (कही हुई) उस राम-संबंधी बात को सुनकर, महामना मारीच का मुख सूख गया और वह अत्यंत भयभीत हो गया।
English Commentary
The scene shifts dramatically from Ravana’s arrogance to Maricha’s terror. Valmiki ironically uses the epithet mahātmanaḥ (high-souled/great mind) for Maricha here, acknowledging his wisdom gained from past defeats and his current ascetic life. Upon merely hearing Ravana's plot concerning Rama, Maricha's physical reaction—a dry mouth (śuṣkam vaktram)—betrays intense fear. This visceral reaction underscores the trauma Maricha carries from his previous encounter with Rama. While Ravana sees a simple plan, the "wise" Maricha sees inevitable doom.

यहाँ परिदृश्य बदलता है। रावण के उत्साह के विपरीत, मारीच की प्रतिक्रिया भय से भरी है। वाल्मीकि ने जानबूझकर मारीच के लिए 'महात्मनः' (महात्मा/बुद्धिमान) विशेषण का प्रयोग किया है, क्योंकि मारीच ने अपने पूर्व अनुभवों से राम के ईश्वरीय बल को पहचान लिया है और अब वह तपस्वी जीवन जी रहा है। राम का नाम मात्र सुनने और उनके विरुद्ध षड्यंत्र की बात सुनने से ही मारीच का 'मुख सूख' गया। यह शारीरिक प्रतिक्रिया उस गहरे आतंक (Trauma) को दर्शाती है जो राम के बाणों ने अतीत में मारीच के मन में बिठाया था।
