तत् श्रुत्वा राक्षसेन्द्रस्य वाक्यम् वाक्य विशारदः ।
प्रत्युवाच महाप्राज्ञो मारीचो राक्षसेश्वरम् ॥३-३७-१॥
Tat śrutvā rākṣasendrasya vākyam vākya viśāradaḥ । Pratyuvāca mahāprājño mārīco rākṣaseśvaram ॥3-37-1॥
Translation
Having heard those words of the King of Rakshasas, Maricha, the greatly wise and skilled in speech, replied to the Lord of Rakshasas.

राक्षसों के राजा (रावण) की वह बात सुनकर, वाणी में निपुण और महाबुद्धिमान मारीच ने राक्षसेश्वर को उत्तर दिया।
English Commentary
This verse marks the beginning of Sarga 37. The epithets used for Maricha—vākya viśāradaḥ (skilled in speech) and mahāprājño (greatly wise)—are crucial. Contradicting a tyrant like Ravana requires immense diplomatic skill. A blunt refusal would result in immediate death. Therefore, Maricha must use his wisdom and rhetorical ability to construct an argument that appeals to Ravana's self-interest while steering him away from destruction. He prepares to navigate this dangerous conversation with the Lord of Rakshasas.

यहाँ से 37वां सर्ग (Sarga 37) आरम्भ होता है। मारीच के लिए दो विशेषण महत्वपूर्ण हैं—'वाक्य विशारदः' (बोलने में कुशल) और 'महाप्राज्ञो' (महाबुद्धिमान)। रावण जैसे क्रोधी और अहंकारी राजा को 'ना' कहना या उसकी योजना का विरोध करना अत्यंत कठिन कार्य है। इसके लिए कूटनीति और वाकपटुता की आवश्यकता होती है। मारीच जानता है कि उसे शब्दों का चयन बहुत सावधानी से करना होगा ताकि रावण का क्रोध न भड़के, फिर भी सत्य उस तक पहुँच जाए।
