किम् उद्यमम् व्यर्थम् इमम् कृत्वा ते राक्षसाधिप ।
दृष्टः चेत् त्वम् रणे तेन तत् अंतम् तव जीवितम् ॥ ॥३-३७-२१॥
Kim udyamam vyartham imam kṛtvā te rākṣasādhipa । Dṛṣṭaḥ cet tvam raṇe tena tat aṃtam tava jīvitam ॥ ॥3-37-21॥
Translation
O Lord of Rakshasas, what is the use of making this futile effort? If you are merely seen by him in battle, that will be the end of your life.
हिंदी अनुवाद
हे राक्षसाधिप! इस व्यर्थ के प्रयास (उद्यम) को करने से तुम्हें क्या लाभ होगा? यदि युद्ध में राम ने तुम्हें देख भर लिया, तो वही तुम्हारे जीवन का अंत होगा।
English Commentary
Maricha deconstructs Ravana's planned offensive as a Vyartha Udyama (futile endeavor). The phrasing is chillingly specific: Maricha asserts that Ravana does not even need to be struck by a weapon; simply being seen (Drishtah) by Rama in battle signifies the end of his life. This suggests that Rama’s wrath and focus are so potent that once locked onto a target, death is a foregone conclusion. It paints a picture of total asymmetry in power—where Ravana is not a combatant, but merely a target waiting to be extinguished.

मारीच रावण के पौरुष को सीधी चुनौती देता है। वह कहता है कि राम के साथ युद्ध करना तो दूर, केवल राम की दृष्टि पड़ना ही रावण की मृत्यु के लिए पर्याप्त है ('दृष्टः चेत् त्वम्')। यह अतिशयोक्ति नहीं, बल्कि मारीच का अपना अनुभव बोल रहा है। वह रावण को 'राक्षसाधिप' कह कर यह याद दिलाता है कि एक राजा के रूप में उसे अपनी सीमाओं का ज्ञान होना चाहिए। 'व्यर्थम् उद्यमम्' (बेकार प्रयास) कहकर मारीच इस पूरी योजना को मूढ़तापूर्ण और निष्फल घोषित कर देता है।
