न च धर्म गुणैर् हीनैः कौसल्या आनंद वर्धनः ।
न च तीक्ष्णो हि भूतानाम् सर्व भूत हिते रतः ॥३-३७-९॥
Na ca dharma guṇair hīnaiḥ kausalyā ānanda vardhanaḥ । Na ca tīkṣṇo hi bhūtānām sarva bhūta hite rataḥ ॥3-37-9॥
Translation
That increaser of Kausalya’s joy is not devoid of virtues or righteousness. He is not harsh towards beings; rather, he is devoted to the welfare of all beings.

कौसल्या का आनंद बढ़ाने वाले राम, धर्म और गुणों से हीन नहीं हैं। वे प्राणियों के प्रति कठोर (तीक्ष्ण) भी नहीं हैं, बल्कि वे तो समस्त प्राणियों के हित में लगे रहते हैं।
English Commentary
Ravana might perceive Rama as cruel for killing Rakshasas, but Maricha corrects this view. He describes Rama as sarva bhūta hite rataḥ—engaged in the welfare of all living beings. Violence is not his nature; it is his duty when required. Describing him as Kausalyā ānanda vardhanaḥ (enhancer of Kausalya's joy) highlights his gentle, familial aspect. Maricha insists that Rama is not tīkṣṇo (harsh/cruel) by nature, but acts out of dharma, dismantling the image of Rama as a mere brute warrior.
