कदाचित् अपि अहम् वीर्यात् पर्यटन् पृथिवीम् इमाम् ।

(एक समय की बात है) मैं भी अपने बाहुबल के घमंड में, हजार हाथियों का बल धारण किए हुए और पर्वत के समान विशाल शरीर लेकर इस पृथ्वी पर घूमता रहता था।
English Commentary
Maricha begins his personal narrative to validate his fear. He describes his former self not as weak, but as a terrifying titan—possessing the strength of a thousand elephants (Naga sahasrasya) and looming like a mountain (Parvatopamah). By establishing his own formidable credentials, Maricha sets the baseline for Rama's power. He implies, "I was once invincible like you," creating a parallel between his past arrogance and Ravana's current state, foreshadowing that Ravana will meet the same fate if he underestimates the same adversary.

यहाँ से मारीच का पूर्व-कथानक (Flashback) शुरू होता है। वह अपने पुराने स्वरूप का वर्णन करता है ताकि रावण को यह बता सके कि वह कोई कायर नहीं था। 'नाग सहस्रस्य बलम्' (हजार हाथियों का बल) और 'पर्वतोपमः' (पर्वत के समान) विशेषण यह बताते हैं कि मारीच स्वयं एक महाबली राक्षस था। वह यह स्थापित कर रहा है: "मैं भी तुम्हारे जैसा ही शक्तिशाली और अहंकारी था।" यह तुलना आगे चलकर राम की शक्ति को और अधिक महिमामंडित करेगी, क्योंकि राम ने ऐसे शक्तिशाली असुर को बाल्यकाल में ही परास्त कर दिया था।
