Srimad Valmiki Ramayana
तम् तदा दण्डकारण्ये यज्ञम् उद्दिश्य दीक्षितम् ।
बभूव उपस्थितो रामः चित्रम् विस्फारयन् धनुः ॥ ॥३-३८-१३॥
Tam tadā daṇḍakāraṇye yajñam uddiśya dīkṣitam । Babhūva upasthito rāmaḥ citram visphārayan dhanuḥ ॥ ॥3-38-13॥
Translation
Then, in the Dandaka forest, Rama stood near the sage who was initiated for the sacrifice, twanging his wonderful bow.
हिंदी अनुवाद
तब दण्डकारण्य में यज्ञ के लिए दीक्षित उस मुनि (विश्वामित्र) के पास राम अपने अद्भुत धनुष को टंकारते (विस्फारयन्) हुए उपस्थित रहे।
English Commentary
The scene moves to the Dandaka forest. Vishvamitra is Dikshita (consecrated for the ritual), rendering him vulnerable and dependent on protection. Rama stands guard, described vividly as Vispharayan dhanuh (stretching/twanging his bow). This auditory detail—the sound of the bow—is significant; it signals readiness and latent power. Maricha recalls this moment to convey that Rama was not passive; he was an active, alert sentinel whose very posture with the Chitram (wonderful) bow spelled danger for intruders.

दृश्य बदलता है—अब राम दंडकारण्य में हैं। विश्वामित्र 'दीक्षित' (यज्ञ दीक्षा लिए हुए) हैं और राम उनके रक्षक हैं। राम की क्रिया 'विस्फारयन् धनुः' (धनुष को खींचना/टंकारना) अत्यंत नाटकीय है। अभी शत्रु आया नहीं है, लेकिन राम तैयार हैं। 'चित्रम्' (अद्भुत) विशेषण धनुष के लिए है। मारीच उस ध्वनि को याद कर रहा है जिसने उसके मन में पहली बार भय उत्पन्न किया था। यज्ञ की शांति और धनुष की टंकार—यह धर्म और शक्ति का मणिकांचन संयोग है।
