व्यचरम् दण्डक अरण्यम् ऋषि मांसानि भक्षयन् ।
विश्वामित्रो अथ धर्मात्मा मत् वित्रस्तो महामुनिः ॥ ॥३-३८-३॥
Vyacaram daṇḍaka araṇyam ṛṣi māṃsāni bhakṣayan । Viśvāmitro atha dharmātmā mat vitrasto mahāmuniḥ ॥ ॥3-38-3॥
Translation
I used to roam the Dandaka forest eating the flesh of Rishis. Then, the righteous great sage Vishvamitra became terrified of me.

मैं ऋषियों का मांस खाता हुआ दंडक वन में विचरण करता था। तब धर्मात्मा महामुनि विश्वामित्र मुझसे अत्यंत भयभीत हो गए थे।
English Commentary
Maricha confesses his atrocity: roaming the forest as a cannibal devouring sages (Rishi mamsani bhakshayan). This highlights the severity of his Adharma. The measure of his menace is established by the reaction of Vishvamitra. Even Vishvamitra, a Mahamuni known for his own fiery temper and immense power, was Vitrasta (terrorized) by Maricha. This historical context explains why Rama was summoned. Maricha draws a parallel: his persecution of sages led to his downfall via Rama; Ravana's persecution of Sita will lead to the same result.

मारीच अपने पाप कर्मों का स्वीकार करता है—'ऋषि मांसानि भक्षयन्' (ऋषियों का मांस खाते हुए)। यह राक्षसी प्रवृत्ति की चरम सीमा है। उसका आतंक इतना था कि 'विश्वामित्र' जैसे महामुनि, जो स्वयं अपार तपोबल के स्वामी थे और क्षत्रिय कुल से थे, वे भी 'वित्रस्त' (त्रस्त/भयभीत) हो गए। यह संदर्भ महत्वपूर्ण है क्योंकि यही भय विश्वामित्र को राजा दशरथ के पास ले गया, जहाँ उन्होंने राम की सहायता मांगी। मारीच यह स्पष्ट कर रहा है कि उसने स्वयं अपनी मृत्यु (राम) को आमंत्रित किया था, ठीक वैसे ही जैसे रावण अब कर रहा है।
