पर दार अभिमर्षात् तु न अनयत् पाप तरम् महत् ।
प्रमदानाम् सहस्राणि तव राजन् परिग्रहे ॥ ॥३-३८-३०॥
Para dāra abhimarṣāt tu na anayat pāpa taram mahat । Pramadānām sahasrāṇi tava rājan parigrahe ॥ ॥3-38-30॥
Translation
O King, there is no sin greater than touching another man's wife. You already have thousands of women in your own household/harem.
हिंदी अनुवाद
हे राजन! पर-स्त्री के स्पर्श (गमन) से बढ़कर दूसरा कोई महान पाप नहीं है। तुम्हारे अंतःपुर में तो पहले से ही हजारों सुंदर स्त्रियाँ मौजूद हैं।
English Commentary
Maricha here addresses the core moral violation: adultery and the coveting of another’s spouse. By stating that there is no sin greater than this, he places Ravana’s intended action in direct opposition to Dharma. Furthermore, Maricha uses logic to counter Ravana's lust by pointing out his existing abundance—Ravana already possesses thousands of wives. This highlights that Ravana’s desire for Sita is not born of lack or need, but of unbridled greed and a lack of self-control (indriya nigraha). Maricha implies that a king who cannot be satisfied with his vast possessions invites his own ruin through unnecessary transgression.

मारीच यहाँ रावण को राजधर्म और नैतिक आचरण की याद दिला रहा है। वह काम (इच्छा) और धर्म के बीच के संघर्ष को रेखांकित करता है। 'पर दार अभिमर्षात्' (परायी स्त्री का स्पर्श/अपहरण) को महापाप बताकर वह रावण को यह समझाना चाहता है कि एक राजा के रूप में उसे अपनी सीमाओं का ज्ञान होना चाहिए। साथ ही, वह रावण को याद दिलाता है कि उसके पास भोग के लिए पहले से ही 'प्रमदानाम् सहस्राणि' (हजारों स्त्रियाँ) हैं, इसलिए सीता का अपहरण आवश्यकता नहीं, बल्कि केवल अनियंत्रित कामवासना और विनाशकारी लोभ है। संतोष ही सुख का मूल है, जिसे रावण भूल चुका है।
