मारीचात् मे भयम् घोरम् समुत्पन्नम् नरेश्वर ।
इति एवम् उक्तो धर्मात्मा राजा दशरथः तदा ।
॥३-३८-५॥
Mārīcāt me bhayam ghoram samutpannam nareśvara । Iti evam ukto dharmātmā rājā daśarathaḥ tadā । ॥3-38-5॥
Translation
"O Lord of Men, a terrible fear has arisen in me due to Maricha." When addressed in this manner, the righteous King Dasharatha replied then.

"हे नरेश्वर! मुझे मारीच से घोर भय उत्पन्न हो गया है।" विश्वामित्र द्वारा ऐसा कहे जाने पर, उस समय धर्मात्मा राजा दशरथ ने (उत्तर दिया)।
English Commentary
Maricha quotes Vishvamitra explicitly naming him ("From Maricha, a terrible fear has arisen") to establish his credentials as a formidable threat of the past. By admitting that a sage of Vishvamitra's caliber was terrified of him, Maricha validates his own prowess. However, the subtext is chilling: if Maricha, who terrified Vishvamitra, is now terrified of Rama, how much more dangerous must Rama be? This sets the stage for Dasharatha's fatherly anxiety, contrasting the sage's confidence in Rama with the king's fear for his son.
