वधिष्यामि मुनिश्रेष्ठ शत्रुम् तव यथा ईप्सितम् ।
एवम् उक्तः स तु मुनी राजानम् इदम् अब्रवीत् ॥ ॥३-३८-८॥
Vadhiṣyāmi muniśreṣṭha śatrum tava yathā īpsitam । Evam uktaḥ sa tu munī rājānam idam abravīt ॥ ॥3-38-8॥
Translation
"O best of sages, I will kill your enemy as desired by you." Being addressed thus, the sage spoke these words to the King.
हिंदी अनुवाद
"हे मुनिश्रेष्ठ! मैं आपकी इच्छा के अनुसार आपके शत्रु का वध कर दूँगा।" ऐसा कहे जाने पर उस मुनि (विश्वामित्र) ने राजा से यह कहा।
English Commentary
Dasharatha commits to eliminating the threat personally. However, this verse serves as the setup for Vishvamitra's rebuttal. It highlights the contrast between worldly confidence and spiritual insight. Dasharatha sees a military problem requiring a military solution; Vishvamitra sees a cosmic problem requiring a divine solution. Maricha includes this dialogue to demonstrate that his initial survival (and subsequent defeat) was part of a larger destiny that ordinary kings like Dasharatha could not comprehend.

दशरथ पुनः आश्वासन देते हैं कि वे शत्रु का वध करेंगे ('वधिष्यामि')। यह एक क्षत्रिय राजा का प्रतिज्ञा-वाक्य है। परन्तु विश्वामित्र, जो त्रिकालदर्शी ऋषि हैं, जानते हैं कि नियति ने मारीच के वध (या दमन) के लिए दशरथ को नहीं, राम को चुना है। यहाँ 'यथा ईप्सितम्' (जैसा आप चाहते हैं) का प्रयोग दशरथ की विनम्रता को दर्शाता है। मारीच यह प्रसंग सुनाकर यह स्थापित कर रहा है कि साधारण क्षत्रिय बल (दशरथ) और दैवीय अवतार बल (राम) के बीच का अंतर विश्वामित्र जानते थे।
