Srimad Valmiki Ramayana
रामम् एव हि पश्यामि रहिते राक्षसेश्वर ।
दृष्ट्वा स्वप्न गतम् रामम् उद् भ्रमामि विचेतनः ॥ ॥३-३९-१७॥
Rāmam eva hi paśyāmi rahite rākṣaseśvara । Dṛṣṭvā svapna gatam rāmam ud bhramāmi vicetanaḥ ॥ ॥3-39-17॥
Translation
O Lord of Rakshasas, I see Rama even in deserted places. Seeing Rama in my dreams, I wake up confused and senseless.
हिंदी अनुवाद
हे राक्षसेश्वर! एकांत (सूने स्थान) में भी मुझे राम ही दिखते हैं। स्वप्न में राम को देखकर मैं अचेत (बेसुध) होकर चौंक उठता हूँ।
English Commentary
Maricha describes the intrusion of Rama into his subconscious and private moments. Whether in solitude (rahite) or in sleep (swapna), there is no sanctuary from the image of Rama. Waking up vicetanah (senseless/confused) from nightmares indicates severe psychological distress. By addressing Ravana as Rakshaseshwara, he pleads with his king to understand that this is not cowardice, but an involuntary physiological and psychological reaction to the trauma inflicted by Rama.

राम का भय मारीच के जागने और सोने, दोनों अवस्थाओं में व्याप्त है। 'रहिते' (एकांत में) भी उसे शांति नहीं है, और 'स्वप्न गतम्' (सपनों में) भी राम उसका पीछा करते हैं। 'उद् भ्रमामि' (भड़क कर उठ बैठना/विचलित होना) बताता है कि उसकी नींद भी हराम हो चुकी है। रावण, जो 'राक्षसेश्वर' है, उसे यह समझना चाहिए कि उसका सबसे अनुभवी गुप्तचर मानसिक रूप से टूट चुका है। यह श्लोक स्पष्ट करता है कि मारीच अब किसी भी तरह से युद्ध के योग्य नहीं रहा।
